On Re-Hearing Nightingales’ Voice

Since I heard the voice of Earl Nightingale in his Acres of Diamonds talk the other day, memories of my early days in sales have coming flooding back to me. All those hours in the car, playing his audio tapes over and over. I felt so over my head in sales in the beginning, so clueless that my only hope, I thought, was to listen to the self-help and sales gurus like Nightingale, Zig Ziegler, Brian Tracy and Tom Hopkins and occasionally I got the courage up to try their suggestions.

Here is a classic story from Earl: a service station owner, when business was very difficult, began to ask himself the following question every day:

What can I do to increase my service to my customers today?

That fellow’s business grew from the moment he first asked the question and then went into action.

Just suppose we asked ourselves this question every day … what then?
